The B11 "Melody" kalimba is carefully handcrafted from solid American cherry wood. Treated and polished with vegetable oils and waxes, the Hokema 11-blade kalimba is precisely tuned in the key of G major, allowing it to be played in a variety of well-known songs. The B11 Melody is perfect for improvisation, on stage, at home, in music workshops or in music therapy. It is very intuitive to play without having to know the music.
As with the other kalimbas
, you can change the scale by moving the blades with the dedicated tool
and thus easily vary the playing moods (see tutorial).
Also known as a sanza
or thumb piano
, the Kalimba is held either in the hands or placed on a support (a table or a drum for example) in order to amplify its sound.
As far as the arrangement of the notes is concerned, the choice of alternating long and short blades allows for a good playing technique but also improves the sound. The six short blades have been bent so that their ends are on a higher plane than the long blades, so that the thumbs can reach them easily. To play the notes from low to high, the five long bars are first activated from the middle outwards by alternating the two thumbs - the right thumb starts on bar 6 - and then the six short bars, also from the middle outwards. The left thumb starts on slat no. 5.
